The advantage of being a devoted crocheter is that when a loved one's birthday suddenly looms out of nowhere I can make them something personal. The issue then becomes deciding what to make... Well no such problem with Mum, since there are so many pairs of her reading glasses floating around, mostly caseless and sometimes scratched. The question then became how to decorate the case and how to make it when sitting on the couch next to her without arousing suspicion!
I went with purple (seems to be my default colour...) with contrasting flowers.
I used the magic circle method of starting the flowers instead of a chain ring - that will mean very little to most people but the magic circle had the advantage of being able to be pulled tighter for a smaller centre and the disadvantage of being more likely to come apart. I avoided this particular disadvantage through leaving long tails and tying it off tightly, then using the wool to attach the flowers. Not a solution I would recommend if you want the inside to be as pretty as the outside, but perfect in this instance.
Lastly, I made a chain of stitches, attached at both ends to form a catch for the button. Not a particularly secure closure, but one that suits the purpose since it is easy to undo and do back up, whilst being secure enough for bumping around in Mum's handbag! And as for not letting Mum see it before it was finished - I am just super sneaky!
If making another case, I would probably make the bottom of it curved in to have a rounded look, either through making two tapered pieces and sewing them together (the one for Mum is just one rectangular piece, doubles over and stitched) or through pushing the corners in and stitiching it in place. Once I am 100% happy with my method, I think I will use this as the basis for my first crocheting pattern. Or is there another project I have completed that would be better suited? Suggestions are welcomed :)
