Upon learning of my super awesome powers of crochet, a friend requested that I make him a black laptop bag. His desire for the logo of the "Irken Military" (from Invader Zim) shows just how geeky my friends are...
I put my thinking cap on and gathered materials.
Here we have the laptop to get bagged, my sketch book with a quick drawing of the logo, 3.5mm crochet hook, 3 x 8ply sport-weight polyester yarn in black and red felt for the logo itself.
Since the bag was to ostensibly protect the laptop from minor damage (scratches, small falls, being jostled in a backpack, etc), I chose single crochet (double crochet to Poms) so that the end result would be thick, durable fabric. And then began the crocheting! So much crocheting. I'm not sure if you can see how big that laptop is but the length of the crochet needed to cover it comfortably ended up being around a metre.
And then when I thought I was getting close I realised that the giant strip would not be wide enough to cover the laptop. Instead of ripping or simply giving up in disgust, I purchased red yarn to do side panels.
Bonus of being terminally lazy is that sometimes it can work in your favour!
The top flap just slides in to the other side of the case and is surprisingly secure.
My plan to felt the logo on was not realised though, because it seriously looked like $#*! in the sample. So the trusty gluegun came out and it actually worked really well. The thickness of the crocheted fabric meant that a bit of the glue was soaked up but it has stayed flexible and unobtrusive - and is lots less likely to fall off!
Turned out pretty spiffy, didn't it?
